The patience of saints

RichardHerring keeps a baby amused.

(This fills me with both joy - at all the positive side - and lots of dread. I hate small talk at the best of times, but the idea of having to spend several years of my life making conversation with something that can't/won't answer back sends shivers down my spine. I've been to some pretty grim meetings and some grimmer parties, but they were still better than this.)

I have a paralysing fear of small talk and parties, to the point of collapse. Especially the ones at work where you stand around with a plate in one hand, a glass in the other, and no possible way of getting the food into your mouth. Add all that to the trying-to-make-conversation-with-the-boss nightmare, and it's not pretty.

thelovelysarahmygirlfriendwhoisananny (her full title) is driven nearly mad by spending all day every day with small people with no conversation. Consequently, in social situations the poor love mostly just sits and smokes.

She finds it very upsetting.

I'm trying to persuade her radio 4 will help.
